British comedy drama, Svengali, starring Jonny Owen, Vicky McClure and Martin Freeman, will be released in cinemas in the UK and Ireland on March 21st, through Munro Film Services.
The feature film, which screened at the 67th Edinburgh International Film Festival 2013 where it competed in the prestigious Michael Powell Award, was borne out of the success of the popular Svengali series of 5 minute webisodes.
The Root Films production is directed by John Hardwick (33X Around the Sun) and tells the big-hearted story of the indefatigable Dixie (Jonny Owen; Shameless) and girlfriend Shell (Vicky McClure; This Is England) who leave their small Welsh home town for London to follow Dixie’s dream of discovering the next great band and managing them. The ensemble cast includes a cameo from real life music mogul, Alan McGee.
Owen, who is also a producer of the film and wrote the screenplay, said “Svengali has been a labour of love for me since the first ever on-line episode five years ago. To see it now as a major film on the big screen is beyond what I ever imagined. Dixie is back… and he’s literally bigger than ever!”
Frank Smith, managing director of Munro Films, added, “We are delighted to be releasing Svengali, which proved to be a great crowd pleaser at the Edinburgh film festival. Our home-grown talent shines on screen in this charming and funny satire, and we have no doubt that cinema audiences will love it.”
Svengali was shot on location in South Wales, London and Scotland.
